Tricuspid Valve

Tricuspid valve is the largest of the four valves in a human heart with normal orifice area of 7 – 9 cm2 and mean gradients generally less than 2mmHg. Tricuspid valve prevents backflow of blood into the right atrium during systole and ensures flow through the pulmonic artery to the lungs.

Tricuspid Regurgitation & Symptoms

Tricuspid Regurgitation (TR) occurs when the tricuspid valve leaks. During functional TR, the tricuspid annulus that is normally a saddle shaped ellipsoid in geometry increasingly becomes planar and circular as it dilates during progression of Tricuspid Regurgitation (TR). Patients with TR may face several clinical symptoms including fatigue, reduced exercising capacity, swelling in extremities, abnormal heart rhythms and shortness of breath ultimately leading to right side heart failure as well as cardiac cirrhosis.
